Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has awarded the Civil Order to Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, in recognition of her contributions amid Israel's war in Gaza.
Albanese has been one of the most vocal international figures on the conflict, accusing Israel of committing genocide and war crimes against Palestinians.
Sanchez's government has positioned Spain as one of the European Union's most outspoken critics of Israel's actions in Gaza, as well as the US-Israel campaign against Iran. Sanchez has described these actions as violations of international law.
Madrid has pushed for an EU-wide arms embargo on Israel, formally recognized the state of Palestine, and refused to allow US forces to use Spanish military bases for operations related to the conflict with Iran.
