Steve Smith has broken the Test record for the most career catches by a non-wicketkeeper as Australia seized a commanding position on day three of the first Test against South Africa in Durban.
Smith took four catches on Sunday to move to 223 in total as South Africa were bowled out for 284 in reply to Australia's 390 at Kingsmead.
Nic Maddinson (17 not out) and Travis Head (10 not out) added 33 runs in just 5.4 overs to stretch Australia's overall lead to 139 before bad light ended play for the third day in a row.
Maddinson, who had laboured through 33 scoreless balls in the first innings, struck two fours off Marco Jansen in the opening over of the second innings and added a six off Wiaan Mulder before the players left the field.
Australia's bowlers applied relentless pressure on a pitch offering good pace, and a string of South African batsmen gave away their wickets with loose strokes.
Six of the Proteas' batsmen passed 30, but David Bedingham's 49 was the highest score.
Australia captain Pat Cummins took three wickets for 54, while Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon claimed two each as Australia's long-established four-man attack combined with familiar efficiency.
Smith special in the slips
Smith began the day on 219 catches, one behind England's Joe Root.
He equalled the record by catching Temba Bavuma. Smith, playing his 126th Test, then broke it by diving to his left from second slip to hold a sharp cut by Bedingham off Cummins.
Smith was involved again with a spectacular catch to dismiss Verreynne, once more reading the play well in the slips as the South African wicketkeeper attempted a reverse sweep and Smith snaffled it with an outstretched right hand.
His fourth catch came from a cut into the slips by last man Anrich Nortje off Beau Webster.
Smith's career tally of 223 catches surpasses the totals of all but 11 specialist wicketkeepers.
