South Africa caused a shock by defeating South Korea 1-0, earning a historic first-ever spot in the World Cup knockout stage. It marked an incredible revival after a disappointing opening loss.
Bafana Bafana, back at the World Cup for the first time since hosting in 2010, were written off after a 0-2 defeat to group winners Mexico. But they fought hard for a 1-1 draw against Czechia and then claimed a decisive win over South Korea to grab second place in the group in Monterrey, courtesy of a second-half strike by Thapelo Maseko.
South Korea coach Myung-Bo Hong surprised by leaving captain Son Heungmin – widely regarded as Asia's best player – on the bench from the start. The Asian side started strongly, with a powerful header by vice-captain Kim Minjae cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba before Lee Kangin shot wide.
South Africa quickly settled, playing with desire and boldness, but their finishing was wasteful. On 30 minutes, they almost scored when the ball fell to Evidence Makgopa after a save by goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu, but he could only prod the ball tamely into the goalkeeper's arms.
Son Heungmin came on at the start of the second half, one of three changes by coach Hong to search for a goal. Early in the half, Maseko missed a good chance, while South Korea forward Oh Hyeongyu forced Ronwen Williams into a save.
As news from Mexico City showed the hosts leading Czechia, tension grew. South Africa seized the moment, with a pass from Tshepang Moremi reaching Maseko, who this time kept his composure to fire past the goalkeeper in the 63rd minute.
South Korea pushed hard in the closing minutes but could not equalise. With the win, South Africa will face co-host Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Mexico topped the group with a perfect 9 points from three wins.
