After wrapping up the morning bowling session on the fifth day, Australia claimed a 214-run victory over South Africa in the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban. The hosts were bowled out before the tea break, having managed a total of just 206 runs.
Josh Hazlewood was the key figure with figures of 6-49, helping Australia secure the six wickets they needed on the final day to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The 35-year-old seamer struck twice in the same over with the new ball, after having taken two wickets on Monday and breaking South Africa's stubborn early resistance.
South Africa began the day with a solid defensive approach, lasting the first 110 minutes before Hazlewood triggered the collapse. Wiaan Mulder, who had resumed alongside Aiden Markram from the overnight score of 102-4, was dismissed when Hazlewood's ball into his pads clipped the bat and was taken by wicketkeeper Alex Carey in a diving catch. The pair had extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 69 runs from 205 balls, with Mulder scoring 29.
Shortly afterwards, Matt Renshaw — named player of the match for his batting — claimed his second Test wicket when Kyle Verreynne quickly followed Mulder back to the pavilion, falling to a careless shot and caught by Steve Smith at slip without scoring.
South Africa went to lunch at 166-6 and added 25 more runs before the new ball was taken, but then collapsed quickly. Jansen was bowled by Hazlewood for 35, and three balls later Simon Harmer also departed when he edged to Carey.
Markram, who had batted patiently for 75 from 237 balls, was then dismissed when Mitch Starc's delivery clipped his pad and was caught behind, but only confirmed after a television review. Hazlewood then completed the victory when last man Anrich Nortje top-edged to Nathan Lyon at short midwicket.
Steve Smith, the former Australia captain, returned to the field on Tuesday after not taking part in the late session on Monday due to a blow to the head while batting. A statement said: "Steve Smith has undergone a series of clinical assessments over the past 24 hours under Cricket Australia's concussion protocols and has been cleared to play this morning."
