At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting at the Jumpers township, near Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday evening local time.
According to police, more than 10 armed gunmen drove to the area and stormed the township just after 11 pm local time. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, police spokesperson, said: "Eight adult males and three adult females were confirmed dead at the scene." Another victim later died in hospital.
"The suspects are believed to have entered the township through both entrances and moved throughout the area, shooting at residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle," Colonel Nevhuhulwi added.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Police said they have launched a manhunt for more than 10 suspects linked to the incident.
The shooting occurred in the Cleveland area, about 6 km (less than 4 miles) east of central Johannesburg.
South Africa is among the countries with the highest murder rates globally, with more than 60 homicides recorded on average each day. The nation has a large number of legal and illegal firearms; shootings are frequent, often stemming from rivalry between gangs and informal businesses.
