Brazil's women's football team endured a chaotic match, receiving eight red cards in a 0-1 loss to the United States women's team in Fortaleza on Tuesday night.
Head coach Arthur Elias and three of his assistants were sent off from the technical area in the second half. On the field, forward Bia Zaneratto received a second yellow card for pushing Emily Sonnett in stoppage time, reducing Brazil to nine players. Shortly after, defender Tarciane was shown a straight red card for an elbow on Sophia Wilson.
After the final whistle, substitutes Kerolin and Ludmila also received red cards for excessive reactions toward the referee.
The only goal of the match came in the 63rd minute when Sophia Wilson's shot deflected off Isabela, wrong-footing goalkeeper Lorena in front of more than 55,000 spectators. The hosts recorded zero shots on target, while the visitors managed six.
This was the second match in the United States women's team's friendly series in Brazil. In the first match in São Paulo on Saturday, the U.S. women lost 2-1. Legend Marta, a six-time FIFA World Player of the Year, came on in the 80th minute, marking her 212th appearance for Brazil.
In another development, Brazil forward Dudinha (20, currently playing for San Diego Wave in the U.S. National Women's Soccer League) suffered a knee injury after a collision with Sonnett in the 30th minute and was taken off on a stretcher. She returned to the bench in the second half using crutches.
The matches in São Paulo and Fortaleza were held at stadiums that will be used for the 2027 Women's World Cup in June and July next year. The U.S. women's team will begin its qualifying campaign in November.
