U.S. President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine, effective from May 9 to May 11, in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on May 9.
“I am pleased to announce a THREE-DAY CEASEFIRE (9th, 10th, and 11th of May) in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote. He said the ceasefire includes the suspension of all military operations, along with an exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country.
Earlier, Russia had declared a unilateral two-day ceasefire to mark the World War II Victory Day on May 9. Ukraine, meanwhile, had previously stated it had proposed a ceasefire but was ignored by Moscow.
Trump said he made the request directly and thanked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing. “Negotiations are ongoing,” he added, noting that “we are getting closer every day.”
“Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and brutal war,” the U.S. president emphasized.
