US law enforcement is responding to reports of gunfire near the White House. No immediate casualties have been reported.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on social media that agents are on the scene and said they will “update the public as soon as possible.”
Al Jazeera correspondent Kimberly Halkett, reporting from Washington, DC, said she heard more than 30 gunshots coming from the area north of the White House. She stressed: “The White House is now surrounded by multiple ambulances and law enforcement agencies. We understand the president was in the Oval Office at the time. Shots were fired outside the White House, but there has been no confirmation from the White House about the president’s status.”
The US Secret Service is investigating the incident.
