New York Mayor Eric Adams on June 15 strongly condemned the surging inflation in the United States, which is severely impacting city residents. At a press conference, Adams said current inflation is partly due to the federal government's "war on climate change" and excessive economic stimulus measures.
"We are seeing prices skyrocket across the board — from food, gasoline to housing. This is a direct result of Washington's misguided policies," Adams stated. The New York mayor called on President Joe Biden's administration to take urgent action to curb inflation, emphasizing that working-class people are bearing the heaviest burden.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Labor Department, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in May rose 8.6% year-on-year, the highest mark since December 1981. Gasoline and food prices were key drivers of the high inflation. Adams also criticized the federal government for spending too much on climate change programs while leaving other pressing issues like energy security and price controls unresolved.
"The fight against climate change is important, but it cannot come at the cost of piling bills and wages that cannot keep up with prices," the New York mayor stressed. He urged the federal government to prioritize short-term measures to ease the burden on residents, such as cutting gasoline taxes and boosting domestic energy production.
Adams' remarks come as inflation becomes a hot political issue in the United States, with the midterm elections approaching. Many Republican lawmakers have also criticized President Biden's economic policies, arguing they are the main cause of inflation.
