Reigning runner-up and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka got off to a smooth start at this year's French Open. She defeated Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (world No. 50) 6-4, 6-2 in just 75 minutes on a sun-drenched Philippe Chatrier Court.
Sabalenka, still seeking her first Roland Garros title, raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set before committing several unforced errors, allowing her opponent to level at 4-4. However, she regained control with a crucial break to take the set.
In the second set, Sabalenka continued to dominate, leading 5-0 before Bouzas Maneiro narrowed the gap to 5-2. The Belarusian star sealed the match with a break after her opponent double-faulted. Immediately after the victory, she applied an ice pack to her face and left the court.
Addressing the crowd, Sabalenka said: "Happy to be back, thank you for your support. It's hot today, thank you for staying, don't forget to stay hydrated." She also acknowledged the pressure but said she is used to it. On her clay-court game, the 26-year-old added: "The most fun part is coming to the net—that's really a joy. I'm very happy that I've improved that part and showed it on court."
