US President Donald Trump announced that Washington will quickly take control of Cuba after concluding its military campaign against Iran, making the statement at the Forum Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. He referenced deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier near Cuba, suggesting the island would surrender. The remarks follow earlier comments about US plans against Cuba and reported secret talks between the US Secretary of State and a relative of Raul Castro.
On May 2, US President Donald Trump declared that the United States intends to take control of Cuba "almost immediately" during a speech before members of the Forum Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The US leader referred to Cuba as a place the US "will take over almost immediately." "Cuba has a problem. We will finish that first. I like getting things done," he said, alluding to the war on Iran. "On the way back from Iran, we can have the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, the world's largest, come in, stop about 100 meters off the coast, and they will say: 'Thank you very much, we surrender,'" Trump added.
Earlier, on March 5, Trump said Washington plans to outline the next steps against Cuba after finishing the military campaign against Iran. He has repeatedly claimed that the Cuban government and economy are on the verge of collapse after oil supplies from Venezuela were cut due to US pressure. On February 27, Trump declared that the US could "establish friendly control over Cuba."
Meanwhile, on March 13, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Havana and Washington held talks "aimed at finding solutions through dialogue on bilateral disagreements." However, Axios reported in February, citing sources, that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was secretly discussing the island's future with Raul Castro's nephew, Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro.
