Multiple people were killed and others injured after a gunman opened fire at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday afternoon local time. Officials confirmed the suspect died at the scene.
In a brief press conference, Police Chief Matthew Hicks said the incident occurred around midday, and officers responded quickly. "We believe the threat to the community has ended," Hicks said, adding that casualty numbers were still unclear and that families of victims were being notified.
"This is a very chaotic scene," Hicks emphasized.
Witness Lane Koehn, who was stopped at a red light near the restaurant, told the Associated Press he saw a man with an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-through area, then get shot by another person with a handgun. Koehn also saw an employee pulling a woman who had been shot in the chest to safety while waiting for medics.
"She was badly injured, but I don't know. I hope she makes it," Koehn said.
City spokesman Josh Palmer said investigators believe there was only one attacker, whose identity is being confirmed, and are also investigating whether anyone else was involved.
Idaho Senator Mike Crapo posted on social media: "I am grateful for the swift response of Idaho's first responders."
The shooting is the latest in a series of gun violence incidents in the U.S., raising concerns about public safety. The motive and identities of the victims have not yet been released.
