During a meeting on June 8, Japanese Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni agreed to promote bilateral cooperation on stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order and freedom of navigation.
Speaking after the talks, Takaichi said Japan and Italy share common views on many regional and global issues, committing to close coordination in multilateral forums. Prime Minister Meloni, for her part, affirmed that Italy values Japan's role in the region and seeks to expand cooperation in security, economic, and technological fields.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in the East China Sea and the Korean Peninsula, stressing the need to resolve differences through peaceful means. Italy reaffirmed its support for Japan's position on territorial issues.
This is the first meeting between two senior officials as both nations deepen their strategic partnership, ahead of the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations in August.
