FBI agents fatally shot a man suspected of taking multiple hostages inside a building in California.
The shooting ended a 12-hour standoff at an office in Bakersfield, which houses a bank branch and school district offices.
Bakersfield police said in a statement that the suspect died in “a shooting involving FBI personnel.”
Police added: “All hostages were located safe and were medically evaluated and treated at the scene.”
Officers were initially dispatched to the location after a bomb threat. Police said the man barricaded himself inside with several people, two of whom were released Tuesday following negotiations with authorities.
Authorities set up a wide perimeter around the building and evacuated nearby City Hall and police headquarters.
Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon told reporters Tuesday that the department had “dedicated all available resources to bring this incident to the safest resolution possible.”
Police said Wednesday the investigation was ongoing and a “significant” law enforcement presence would remain in the area.
The suspect’s identity was not immediately released, and the motive remained unclear.
