President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on June 14 that an agreement with Iran has been finalized. "Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" Trump wrote. The deal ends the US- and Israel-led war against Iran, including Israeli strikes on Lebanon, and reopens the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The accord is expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said a broader agreement lifting sanctions on Iran will be negotiated during a 60-day ceasefire. The deal is described as a major breakthrough after months of fighting that killed thousands and sent global energy prices soaring.
The agreement earned praise from numerous countries and international organizations. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Washington and Tehran for "their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict" and thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their roles in brokering the deal.
Qatar expressed "its appreciation for the determination of both the US and Iranian sides and their commitment to moving towards resolving differences through negotiations and peaceful means." Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi expressed hope the deal "will serve as a catalyst for broader efforts to promote stability and address outstanding issues through responsible and constructive engagements."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "I view the agreement reached between the US and Iran as an important development in establishing peace and tranquility in our region, and I welcome it with satisfaction." Erdogan affirmed Turkey will continue to support all efforts to establish peace and stability in the region.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed the deal as a "significant step" toward "a peaceful resolution of the conflict."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the agreement an "extremely important" step in ending the war and stressed that "unimpeded freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be restored." He offered support for mine clearance operations if needed and said: "For lasting peace, the commitments made, particularly regarding Iran's nuclear program, must be robust, verifiable, and fully enforced. Britain's firm and longstanding position is that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons."
French President Emmanuel Macron called for "the urgent and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz." He declared on social media: "The resumption of maritime traffic, without restrictions or fees, is an indispensable condition for regional stability and the global economy." Macron also said France will support "the determined efforts of the Lebanese government" to restore state sovereignty.
