US Condemns Russia's Arrest of Japanese Journalist on Espionage Charges

The US State Department on Monday criticized Russia's arrest of a Japanese journalist in the Far East on charges of espionage, according to reporting from Kyodo news agency.

In its statement, Washington expressed concern over the incident and urged Moscow to handle the matter in line with its international commitments. No details have yet emerged about the journalist's identity or the specific timing of the arrest.

The case comes amid already strained relations between Russia and Japan over a long-running territorial dispute involving several islands in the Far East claimed by both sides. Developments surrounding the journalist's detention are drawing international attention.
