Tokyo, May 26, 2026 – East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) showcased a self-driving bus with the highest level of automation (Level 4) to the media on May 26. The driverless vehicle is designed to operate on a special route built on part of the former Kesennuma Line tracks, which were devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
According to JR East, the bus will run without a human driver, relying solely on sensors and artificial intelligence to navigate complex traffic situations. The 2.5-kilometer test route is located in the town of Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture.
Commercial operations are expected to begin in late 2026, serving local residents and tourists in the disaster-affected area. The initiative is part of JR East's efforts to restore transportation infrastructure in Japan's Tohoku region and promote advanced self-driving technology.
Level 4 automation means the bus requires no human intervention in all operational scenarios on the controlled track, though a central coordinator will monitor remotely to handle emergencies.
