On April 1, Iran affirmed that final negotiations with the United States can only take place after the agreement between the two countries is fully implemented. The statement came amid indirect talks between Tehran and Washington that have made some progress but still face many disagreements.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani emphasized: “Final negotiations depend on the full implementation of the existing agreement. No other step can replace compliance with the signed terms.” He also said Iran has sent messages to relevant parties about this demand.
The Iran-US agreement, signed in August 2023, includes provisions for prisoner exchanges and the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds in exchange for Tehran limiting its nuclear program. However, negotiations on more core issues, such as the ballistic missile program and regional activities, have yet to yield results.
The US has not officially responded to Iran's latest statement. Previously, Washington repeatedly called on Iran to halt sensitive nuclear activities and fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
