Tehran, [date] – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday affirmed his country's legal right to retaliate against any aggressive action by the United States. The statement comes amid continued strains in relations following a series of recent military and diplomatic moves.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Araghchi stressed that Iran would not hesitate to take necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and national interests. “We have the right to self-defense under international law and will respond proportionately to any act of aggression,” he said.
The remarks follow a US increase in military presence in the Middle East and additional sanctions targeting Iran. Washington alleges that Iran threatens regional security, while Tehran accuses Washington of interfering in its internal affairs.
Analysts say Araghchi's statement signals Iran's readiness to escalate tensions if needed, but also leaves the door open for dialogue. Tehran has repeatedly called on Washington to ease tensions and lift sanctions.
No official response from the US side has been issued yet.
