Iranian state-affiliated media report clashes with the US Navy in the Strait of Hormuz, with explosions at ports. Tasnim news agency says three US destroyers came under fire after attempting to attack an Iranian tanker. The US Central Command declined to comment.
Several Iranian state-affiliated news outlets have reported explosions at the ports of Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas, though the source of the incidents remains unclear.
Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday that Iranian forces clashed with the US Navy after American troops attempted to attack an Iranian oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. Tasnim said three US destroyers came under fire from Iran and fled toward the Gulf of Oman.
The US Central Command declined to comment on these events when contacted by Al Jazeera. The Pentagon has not yet responded.
The clashes come amid reports that Washington and Tehran are engaged in high-level negotiations to end the war.
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump ordered a campaign to break Iran's blockade of Hormuz, leading to increased tensions and pushing a ceasefire to the brink of collapse.
On Monday, the US said it shot down seven small Iranian drones, and Iran relaunched drone and missile attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
