Iraq’s National Security Council issued an official statement on Monday condemning airstrikes carried out by the United States and Saudi Arabia against targets belonging to the Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces).
In the statement, the council affirmed that the attacks constitute a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called on the international community to denounce the action.
Hashd al-Shaabi is a government-recognized paramilitary force that played a key role in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
No official response has yet been received from the United States or Saudi Arabia regarding Iraq’s statement.
