Spain enters the 2026 World Cup as reigning European champions, but the most striking detail of its 26-man roster is the absence of any Real Madrid player – the first time the royal club has been completely shut out of a World Cup squad in history.
Instead, Barcelona dominates with eight players: Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres. Additionally, seven players ply their trade in the Premier League.
Speaking at a press conference organized by RTVE and EFE, coach Luis de la Fuente emphasized: “For me, the greatest team – truly the greatest – is the Spanish national team. I don't care where a player comes from or his background. What matters is that Spanish players are proud to wear the jersey and be part of a united nation.”
He also dismissed suggestions that his decision might cost him support among Real Madrid fans: “The day I make a mistake, fail to make the right choice, or act just for immediate results, I am putting my job on the line.”
Coach De la Fuente acknowledged that subjective factors are unavoidable in selection, but insisted only professional considerations prevail. He also addressed the fitness of key players: Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mikel Merino are recovering from injuries. “We are in contact with all clubs. I am very optimistic and believe they will be ready for the first match,” he said.
Spain opens Group H against Cape Verde, followed by Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. On Lamine Yamal – the 18-year-old Barcelona talent – De la Fuente said: “He is completely excited and ready to explode. Although only 18, Yamal has incredible maturity and knows this is his moment. You have to seize the moment. And he knows it.”
Among the absent Real Madrid players are defender Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal, who were part of previous call-ups.
