Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 26 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the San Antonio Spurs 123-108 in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals, taking a 2-1 lead in the series. The defending NBA champions displayed a comprehensive offensive performance, with four bench players scoring in double figures.
Jared McCain led the Thunder reserves with 24 points, while Jaylin Williams added 18 points including 5 three-pointers. French star Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 26 points, and Devin Vassell contributed 20 points.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault praised his team's resilience after they overcame an early 15-point deficit. “It was a punch – they were ready and took advantage early. But I saw us stay composed and understand the game is 48 minutes,” Daigneault said. “Our bench gave us a huge jolt and helped us take control of the game.”
The game started explosively as the Spurs jumped to a 15-0 lead in the opening minutes. The Thunder quickly stabilized and cut the deficit to 31-29 early in the second quarter, before Gilgeous-Alexander hit a three-pointer to give the visitors their first lead.
Oklahoma City led 58-51 at halftime thanks to a 32-20 second quarter, with 10 points each from Ajay Mitchell and Alex Caruso. Tensions flared early in the third quarter when Mitchell pushed Stephon Castle, leading to a confrontation between Vassell and Mitchell. The Thunder led 67-57 at that point and maintained pressure to lead 95-84 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Thunder held their advantage and closed out the game convincingly. Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson remarked: “We started sharp but couldn't sustain it. The early pace wasn't durable, and we need to find a way to maintain that level.”
Game 4 of the best-of-seven series will be held in San Antonio on Sunday.
