On March 26, Kyoto Prefectural Police executed an arrest warrant for a 49-year-old man, the stepfather of the victim, on suspicion of murder. The warrant was issued after the body of the 17-year-old boy was discovered in a mountainous area of Kyoto Prefecture on March 24, concluding a three-week search.
According to investigative sources, the victim was identified as a high school student in Uji City. The boy went missing in early March, and his family reported it to police immediately. The search expanded with the involvement of local police and rescue teams, using drones and sniffer dogs.
The body was found partially decomposed in a hilly area about 10 kilometers from the victim's home. Autopsy results determined the cause of death as asphyxiation, strengthening suspicions of homicide.
The stepfather was arrested at his home early in the morning without resistance. Police have not disclosed the suspect's motive but said they had gathered sufficient evidence from the scene and witness statements to issue the arrest warrant.
The case has drawn significant public attention in Japan, raising questions about child safety in blended family environments. Kyoto Prefectural Police said they will continue investigating to clarify the full circumstances and reach a final conclusion.
