A court on Indonesia's tourist island of Bali on Thursday (August 15) sentenced a Swiss tourist to one year in prison for offending Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, a sacred religious observance for Balinese Hindus.
According to the indictment, the tourist committed an act deemed offensive during the Day of Silence — a period when locals strictly adhere to rules of staying indoors, keeping lights off, and maintaining absolute silence as a mark of respect for the deities. The visitor's behavior was considered a violation of these sacred rules, sparking anger within the local community.
The verdict comes as Balinese authorities tighten regulations on foreign visitors to preserve the island's unique cultural and religious values. Local officials have previously issued warnings about disrespectful conduct by some tourists, noting that stronger measures—including deportation and entry bans—could be applied.
It remains unclear whether the Swiss tourist will appeal the ruling.
