Iran's Ambassador to the UK, Mohsen Baharvand, on February 12 urged the British government to condemn US economic sanctions against Iran, labeling the measures as "economic terrorism" imposed by Washington on Tehran.
Speaking at an event in London, Baharvand stressed that US sanctions not only target the Iranian government but also inflict severe harm on ordinary citizens, particularly in healthcare, food, and essential goods.
The Iranian ambassador argued that the UK's continued diplomatic and trade relations with Iran are vital and called on London to take a stronger stance against US unilateral actions, which he said run counter to international law and multilateral mechanisms.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US, as Washington reimposed comprehensive economic sanctions after withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). Tehran has repeatedly accused the US of using sanctions as a tool of political pressure.
There has been no official response yet from the UK Foreign Office regarding the ambassador's appeal. However, analysts suggest this diplomatic move indicates Tehran is seeking to increase pressure on Washington's European allies to mitigate the impact of sanctions.
