North Korean denuclearization has become an "increasingly unrealistic" goal, and the United States and its allies should move beyond it to channel diplomatic efforts into arms-limitation talks and crisis communications. That is the assessment of the director of the U.S.-based North Korea analysis site 38 North.
According to the head of 38 North, rather than continuing to pursue a denuclearization goal widely seen as unattainable, Washington and its allies need to adjust their diplomatic focus. Specifically, the parties should aim for discussions on arms limitations and maintain communication channels to manage crisis situations.
The view comes as North Korea continues to assert its status as a nuclear power. Earlier, an analysis piece on 38 North titled "North Korea more confident in nuclear power status 20 years after first test" also reflected an assessment of Pyongyang's increasingly consolidated nuclear capabilities.
