Officials in Summerland, a district in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, declared a state of emergency as fast-moving wildfires continue to rage. The emergency was announced early Saturday morning local time after the Bald Range fire surpassed containment efforts, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.
According to Emergency Management British Columbia, the evacuation order issued Saturday morning covers the Peachland watershed, the Brenda Mines area, downtown Lower Princeton, and surrounding regions. All residents have been instructed to leave immediately.
Summerland, home to roughly 12,000 people as of the 2021 census, experienced power outages due to the fire, and local officials advised residents to boil water before consumption.
Amelia Boultbee, the member of the legislative assembly for Penticton-Summerland, expressed concern on social media: “Summerland, Faulder and Peachland. Our hearts are heavy tonight as we watch the Bald Range fire. Firefighters and rescue workers are doing extraordinary work, and I stand with them, all evacuees, and volunteers.”
Canada is enduring a summer marked by major wildfires in provinces such as Ontario and Quebec. Scientists say climate change has heightened wildfire conditions in recent decades as many regions worldwide face extreme drought and heat waves. In recent months, Canada and the United States experienced record-breaking heat domes that dried out vegetation, creating ripe conditions for fires to ignite.
South of British Columbia, Washington state in the U.S. has also faced large wildfires this month, contributing to air pollution across the region. International firefighting teams from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand have been deployed to assist Canada. Approximately 1,500 firefighters are currently active in British Columbia, where 39 evacuation orders and 49 alerts have been issued.
Premier David Eby stated that the province has ample resources to handle the fires, including additional firefighting aircraft. On social media, he urged: “Residents in the area should monitor updates. If asked to evacuate, leave immediately. Conditions are changing extremely quickly.”
