California police said Monday they are responding to an active shooting at a mosque in San Diego. The incident took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD), located in a residential area of the Clairemont neighborhood, north of downtown.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the area. San Diego police said the situation remains active but is "contained," and confirmed a large law enforcement presence at the scene. Aerial footage showed officers surrounding the mosque.
No official casualty report has been released. However, the Associated Press quoted Officer Anthony Carrasco as saying he believed someone had been shot. Police established a reunification point for residents in the area. ICSD posted on social media that children could be picked up at a nearby church.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said he was receiving continuous updates. "Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to keep our community safe and secure the area," he wrote on social media platform X.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with local law enforcement agencies. "We are grateful for the first responders working on scene to protect the community and urge everyone to follow the direction of authorities," the office said in a statement.
