Despite being considered underdogs in terms of class, the home side Japan delivered a commendable performance, trading blows with the higher-ranked team from the Southern Hemisphere. The squad, led by their head coach, repeatedly took the lead through their effective midfield attacks.
But they could not overcome the Wallabies, as Australia's coach Dave Rennie's side showed solidity and experience in crucial moments. The turning point came in the second half when veteran winger Marika Koroibete scored a decisive try, giving the visitors a 35-25 lead.
From then on, Japan mounted continuous pressure and narrowed the deficit to 35-32 thanks to a clever run down the left flank. However, in the final minutes, Australia's resolute defense held firm to secure the win for the team.
Meanwhile, in a simultaneous match, New Zealand cruised to an easy 38-10 victory over Argentina in Christchurch. This defeat marked Japan's 10th consecutive loss to Australia in 15 historical meetings between the two sides.
Speaking after the match, Japan's head coach Jamie Joseph said: "We had good moments and could have done better. This is a big lesson for the young players as we prepare for the 2027 World Cup in Australia."
