Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 and draw level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, making an impressive start immediately after the three-week international break.
Mikel Arteta's side struggled to impose themselves against a well-organised opponent in the first half, but rediscovered their form after the interval to claim their fifth win in six matches this season.
Defender James Justin put Leeds into a deserved lead early in the second half at the Emirates, silencing the home crowd in the October sunshine.
But Arsenal equalised a few minutes later through Riccardo Calafiori, and substitute Bruno Guimaraes scored the winner after a finely crafted team move.
Attention returned to the pitch on Saturday after the shock announcement that City had been found to have breached Premier League financial rules more than 100 times.
However, Arsenal — who had a perfect record before their 0-3 defeat to Brighton last month — struggled to break down the solid defence of Daniel Farke's side in the first half.
Noni Madueke, overlooked by Thomas Tuchel in England's most recent squad, was handed a rare start on the left of Arsenal's attack in place of the injured Christos Tzolis.
But neither he nor Bukayo Saka on the opposite flank could make much headway against a defence that had conceded just three league goals this season.
Leeds had a few half-chances late in the first half.
First, Jayden Bogle and Anton Stach got in each other's way when Stach shot into his own teammate. Then Bogle was denied from close range by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who rushed out quickly to close down the shot.
Raya was also alert in getting down to block Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson's shot from a narrow angle.
Arsenal managed just one shot on target in the entire first half, but the game opened up after the break with chances for both sides.
Impressive Leeds midfielder Ao Tanaka forced Raya to tip the ball over the bar before Justin put the visitors ahead in the 55th minute, finishing sweetly from just outside the box after Gudmundsson's cross from a well-worked move down the left.
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes got a touch but could not keep the ball out of the net.
But Arsenal equalised just seven minutes later when Calafiori, unmarked, beat England goalkeeper James Trafford after an assist from Ben White.
Worse followed for Leeds when Guimaraes fired home after a slick exchange down Arsenal's left involving Saka, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.
The win took Arsenal to 15 points, behind leaders City only on goal difference.
Enzo Maresca's City, with a game in hand, were preparing for a hostile reception at Liverpool on Sunday following last week's guilty verdict.
