US and Iran both claim control of Strait of Hormuz as ship attacks escalate
Dozens of ships have been attacked in or near the Strait of Hormuz in October as the US and Iran compete for control of the strategic waterway, with UKMTO confirming at least 12 attacks in the week to October 16 and two vessels reportedly hitting mines this week. Oil flows through Hormuz have fallen to about 68% of pre-war levels and Brent crude touched $110 a barrel, while Washington and Tehran offer conflicting accounts of who controls the strait.
