Top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the fourth round of the Cincinnati Masters on Monday with a hard-fought 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (8/6) victory over Terrance Atmane. It was the German's 46th win of the season, having already clinched the Roland Garros title and reached the Wimbledon final this year.
Zverev sealed the match with a stunning backhand down the line. He said Atmane played very aggressively and made it difficult for him to impose his game.
Earlier the same day, the Williams sisters made their long-awaited return to doubles competition for the first time since the 2022 US Open. The legendary duo, boasting 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals, fell to Americans Peyton Stearns and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 2-6, 6-1, 8-10 in a decisive match tie-break.
Serena Williams said they had no ambitions of winning the title, only hopes of enjoying their time on court. She also revealed that this comeback would be short-lived.
In men's singles, fifth seed Alex de Minaur overcame Arthur Fery 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) despite multiple rain delays. He will face Arthur Fils in the next round. Thiago Tirante, who had earlier eliminated Novak Djokovic in the second round, continued his deep run by defeating Martin Landaluce 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4).
In women's singles, Elena Rybakina overcame two rain interruptions to beat Magdalena Frech 6-4, 7-6 (7/2). Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula also secured victories on a day marked by erratic weather.
