At least four people, including three children, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, in the northwestern United States, according to information from law enforcement provided to CBS and CNN.
The incident took place on Thursday at the school, located about 160km southeast of Portland.
Authorities said the suspected shooter is dead, though it was not immediately clear whether the suspect was among the four initial fatalities.
Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, said on Thursday: "We are currently going room by room and evacuating everyone present in the school. This is something we never want to happen in Bend. It is a tragedy."
According to Miller, authorities received a call about a shot fired at a car outside the school at 12:59 p.m. local time (19:59 GMT) and were on the scene within minutes.
The suspect was shot and killed shortly afterward, though Miller said she did not know whether police or a bystander subdued the individual.
The number and condition of those injured had not been immediately determined.
Kash Patel, director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said in a social media post that the agency was on the scene to assist local law enforcement in the investigation. "We will provide them with every resource they need," he wrote.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also said she was closely monitoring the situation.
Jeff Merkley, the U.S. senator representing Oregon, was among the political leaders who offered condolences after the shooting. "My heart goes out to the Bend community and all the students and families affected. No one should have to fear violence at school," he wrote on the social media platform X.
