The 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring 48 teams, is moving toward its knockout phase, starting this Sunday. Only 32 teams will advance to the next round of the world's most prestigious tournament. This is the first time the World Cup has expanded to 48 participants, and several debutants have made a strong impression.
Knockout stage format
The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, qualify for the knockout stage. The round of 32 debuts at the World Cup after the expansion from 32 to 48 teams.
After the round of 32 comes the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the third-place match. The final is set for July 19.

- Round of 32: June 28 – July 3
- Round of 16: July 4 – July 7
- Quarterfinals: July 9 – July 11
- Semifinals: July 14 – July 15
- Third-place match: July 18
- Final: July 19
