The Washington Wizards selected 19-year-old forward Anicet “AJ” Dybantsa Jr., standing 6'9", with the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, held on June 23.
Dybantsa played just one college season for the Brigham Young University Cougars, averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists across 35 starts.
He previously led the U.S. national team to the U19 World Cup title in 2025 and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
“This means everything to me,” Dybantsa told ESPN moments after being selected. “But this is just the first step—I still have a lot of work to do. This success is a testament to the hard work, discipline, and sacrifices I’ve made.”
Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz selected guard Darryn Peterson from the University of Kansas with the second pick. Peterson, standing 6'6", also played just one college season, averaging 20.2 points. He is expected to team up with Keyonte George to help the Jazz rebuild following a disappointing 22–60 season.
The Memphis Grizzlies chose Cameron Boozer with the third pick. Boozer, 18, stands 6'9" and is the son of former NBA star Carlos Boozer. He played one season at Duke University, averaging 22.5 points. His college campaign ended prematurely after a right eye injury in Duke's 73–72 loss to the University of Connecticut in the Elite Eight.
“It’s insane,” Boozer said afterward. “Joy and happiness just wash over you—my entire life came down to those few seconds.” He also thanked his family for their support throughout the journey.
