UNESCO has released a report highlighting the science tourism potential of the Lut Desert, one of the hottest and driest places on Earth, located in southeastern Iran. The desert was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016 for its unique geological and landscape values.
According to the report, the Lut Desert boasts rare dune systems, canyons, and salt formations, creating ideal conditions for research into climate change, ecology, and geology. Its surface temperature once reached 80.8°C in 2018, breaking the world record.
UNESCO recommends that Iranian authorities develop educational tours, allowing visitors to observe natural phenomena, attend scientific workshops, and help preserve the fragile ecosystem. This move is expected to boost the local economy while raising awareness about climate change.
Experts believe that developing science tourism must go hand-in-hand with strict environmental protection measures to prevent negative impacts on the natural landscape. The report also calls on the international community to support Iran in studying and managing this heritage site.
