Ukraine's military intelligence agency said on August 6 that Russia and North Korea are discussing plans to increase the deployment of North Korean soldiers to three regions in western Russia that border Ukraine, which would allow Russian units to be freed up and sent to the front lines.
According to the agency, if the plan is implemented, the total number of North Korean troops in western Russia could rise to as many as 50,000. The move is believed to be aimed at bolstering defensive capabilities and enabling the Russian military to rotate forces amid ongoing intense fighting.
Ukrainian officials have previously reported on several occasions about the presence of North Korean soldiers in military operations related to Russia. However, neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has issued an official response to the latest information.
There has been no independent confirmation of the plan so far. Analysts suggest that increased military cooperation between Russia and North Korea could alter the balance of forces in certain areas, but it also poses logistical and control challenges along the extended front lines.
