Ukraine is planning to increase the use of autonomous drones powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in its conflict with Russia by the end of 2026, a representative from a Ukrainian government platform recently revealed to Kyodo News.
According to the information, these autonomous drones can operate completely independently, without human intervention, during target identification, tracking, and engagement. This enhances combat effectiveness and reduces risks for Ukrainian soldiers.
The representative emphasized that expanding the use of AI drones is part of Ukraine's military modernization strategy, aimed at leveraging advanced technology to counter Russian forces on the battlefield. Ukraine has tested autonomous drone systems in recent months and recorded positive results.
The decision comes as Kyiv continues to seek technological advantages over its adversary. Military experts believe AI drones could change the course of the war due to their fast, precise strike capabilities and resistance to interception.
However, the expansion plan also raises ethical and legal concerns regarding the use of autonomous weapons and AI in conflict. The Ukrainian military insists it adheres to international regulations and will only deploy these systems under strictly controlled circumstances.
