Japanese university graduate employment rate holds at 98%

Japan's Ministry of Labour on May 19 released data showing that the employment rate for university graduates in 2026 reached 98.0%, unchanged from the previous year and the second-highest level on record.

As of April 1, 98% of all university graduates seeking employment had found jobs. The figure indicates that Japan's labour market continues to remain stable, especially amid the post-pandemic economic recovery.

This is the third consecutive year that the rate has exceeded 97%, reflecting strong hiring demand from businesses against a backdrop of an ageing population and labour shortages. The record high remains 98.2%, recorded in 2024.

The Ministry said that industries such as information technology, healthcare and construction continue to lead in demand for new graduates. The stability of the labour market is attributed to government employment support policies and the expansion of the digital economy.
