French President Emmanuel Macron will chair the One Planet Summit in Paris on Tuesday, with approximately 50 world leaders in attendance. The event is convened to chart a course forward after the U.S. administration announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Leaders will focus on accelerating climate action, including mobilizing financial resources and advancing international cooperative initiatives. The summit comes amid global concern over the impact of the U.S. decision—the United States being the world’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
This is the second One Planet Summit, following the inaugural gathering in 2017. This year's event is expected to yield concrete commitments to sustain momentum toward the Paris Agreement goals, despite Washington’s absence from the process.
