Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on May 14 that he hopes to discuss Japan’s new defense and security strategy, as well as its regional energy role, during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi later this month.
Speaking to reporters, Marcos said his state visit to Tokyo will focus on advancing bilateral cooperation in key sectors. He emphasized his desire to exchange views with Prime Minister Takaichi on adjustments in Japan’s defense and security policies, which are undergoing significant shifts amid the evolving regional landscape.
Energy will also be a central topic in the talks. President Marcos expressed interest in exploring Japan’s growing role in the regional energy sector, particularly renewable energy initiatives and energy transition efforts.
The visit is expected to take place in late May 2026, marking a new step in the strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, following a series of earlier high-level engagements between the two countries.
