Brazilian President Lula da Silva is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this weekend. The trip, first reported by Brazilian media, comes after a period of improved ties despite lingering differences over foreign policy and Trump's relationship with Bolsonaro.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to travel to the United States this weekend for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to media reports.
Brazil's O Globo newspaper first reported the trip on Monday. Reuters later cited two unnamed Brazilian officials confirming Lula will visit the U.S. in the coming days. One source said the Brazilian president would depart on Wednesday, with the meeting with Trump scheduled for the following day.
The White House has not yet confirmed the visit.
Relations between left-leaning Lula and Trump have improved after an initial period of tension, when the U.S. imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods and pressured the Brazilian government to drop a case against former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro related to an alleged coup plot.
Despite continued disagreements over foreign policy and the Trump administration's ties with Bolsonaro and his allies, the two leaders held a phone call in January, during which Lula indicated he would visit the U.S. in the future. In October last year, Trump and Lula had a brief face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur.
