Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on August 25 signed a decree appointing Ali Rezaei as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), replacing Ali Shamkhani, as reported by the official IRNA news agency.
Rezaei, born in 1962, is a senior military officer who previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces and was a member of the Chief of Staff's war advisory council. With years of experience in security and defense, he is regarded as a deep expert on strategic issues.
According to Iranian media, the appointment comes as Iran faces multiple regional security challenges, including attacks allegedly linked to Israel and escalating tensions with the United States. The SNSC was previously led by Ali Shamkhani, who has stepped down after more than a decade in the role.
Analysts say the reshuffle reflects the new administration's direction to strengthen the military's role in national security decisions. In his appointment statement, President Pezeshkian emphasized the need for close coordination between security and defense bodies to protect national interests.
