The family and friends of Jordan Yap, an Australian traveller believed missing on a remote hiking route in South America, have confirmed he was found and did not survive.
Jordan Yap, 30, from Melbourne, last made contact with friends and family on 14 September, before setting off on a planned 10-day solo trek along Peru's Huayhuash mountain range, about 400km northeast of the capital, Lima.
In a social media post on Saturday, his friends and family said: "It is with heavy hearts that we regret to inform you that Jordan has been found, and he has not survived."
"We want to thank everyone who helped: friends and family, those who donated, the search teams, the police, the many groups we contacted and those who gave their time and effort, and everyone who shared information on social media. We are grateful to you all.
"Please remember Jordan as the vibrant person he was, and for the immense joy he brought to so many people's lives.
"Rest in peace, Jordan – from your friends and family."
The Melbourne man was last seen near the starting point of the route across the Cordillera Huayhuash, considered a challenging high-altitude trek through the remote Andes. Friends and family regarded him as a highly experienced hiker.
Friends and family grew worried after he failed to make contact on his expected return date, did not check out of the Krusty hostel in Huaraz and missed a booked flight from Lima to Cusco.
The trekking enthusiast had lost the satellite locator device he was carrying a few days before setting out on the 120km route, raising further concerns.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
