US Senator Mitch McConnell, who has been absent from public view since mid-June, announced that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility and will continue treatment at home.
The announcement came on Thursday (July 23), ten days after his last statement on his health, and coincided with the Senate preparing for its August recess. Critics have accused the 84-year-old senator and his team of a lack of transparency regarding his condition.
McConnell has not appeared publicly since June 11. His prolonged absence has narrowed the Republican majority in the Senate amid key votes.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation facility to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said, expressing gratitude to those who have supported and provided medical care.
He previously said he was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall at his home in Washington, DC. His office released two photos of him at the hospital but no video or audio recordings. The latest statement did not include new photos.
“On the advice of my doctors, I will continue intensive physical therapy at home during the Senate recess and remain in contact with my staff and colleagues on important Senate matters.”
His absence from legislative activity has fueled criticism about the advanced age of many elected US officials. The prolonged silence also fed conspiracy theories, including claims from pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer that the true nature of McConnell’s condition was being hidden. Loomer had baselessly suggested he was “brain dead” and later claimed photos released by his office were altered.
McConnell is not seeking re-election and will leave office at the end of his term in January 2027. Republican Representative Andy Barr and Democrat Charles Booker, a former state legislator, will face off in the November 3 midterm election.
Under Kentucky law enacted in 2024, the governor can call a special election in the event of a vacancy. The law also requires the governor to give 63 days’ notice, meaning such a vote could coincide with the midterms. Experts told Al Jazeera that any attempt to replace McConnell for the remainder of his term would likely face legal challenges, potentially leaving the seat vacant for an extended period.
Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the 100-member Senate, but some lawmakers are increasingly willing to break party discipline. McConnell’s vacancy would further narrow their margin.
McConnell’s announcement came weeks after Senator Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, died suddenly on July 11. His sister, Darline Graham, temporarily holds his seat and has surprisingly received Trump’s endorsement ahead of Tuesday’s special primary.
