Japanese PM Urges Iran to Ensure Freedom of Navigation Through Strait of Hormuz

On May 26, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During the discussion, Ms. Takaichi stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and urged Iran to ensure the safety of vessels transiting the area.

The Strait of Hormuz is currently effectively blockaded, disrupting a vital global oil and cargo shipping route. Japan, which relies heavily on energy imports from the Middle East, has a particularly strong interest in the situation.
