Japan PM Calls for Assessing Hormuz Situation Before Deploying SDF

Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi said on June 16 that any deployment of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to the Strait of Hormuz must be based on a comprehensive assessment of the security situation in the region. The remarks came amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning key oil shipping routes.

According to Kyodo News, Prime Minister Takaichi stressed that Japan would not make a hasty decision but would thoroughly analyze risk factors and coordinate with international partners. He noted that deploying the SDF is a sensitive issue requiring careful legal, diplomatic, and strategic consideration.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic flashpoint, with about one-fifth of the world's crude oil passing through it. Any Japanese military move there could affect the country's energy security and foreign relations.
