The Malaysian government said on August 10 that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is undergoing medical checks and a procedure as recommended by a team of specialists, and is expected to remain under observation for the next two days.
Senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah confirmed that Mr. Anwar is undergoing examinations and a procedure on the advice of specialist doctors. However, details of the procedure were not disclosed.
"Let us pray that all matters related to the Prime Minister's examination and procedure go smoothly and that he is blessed with good health, so that he can soon return to his duties as usual," Mr. Tunku Nashrul said.
The announcement coincided with Mr. Anwar's 79th birthday (born August 10, 1947). He has served as Malaysia's Prime Minister since November 2022.
In January, Mr. Anwar underwent a routine medical check-up and was assessed by doctors to be in good health, fit to continue his official duties.
Previously, Mr. Anwar had been treated for back and shoulder issues. In June 2018, he was hospitalized for shoulder and back pain, and underwent spinal surgery in Istanbul the following month. He was also scheduled for surgery on his right shoulder due to a rotator cuff injury.
There is currently no indication that this procedure is related to Mr. Anwar's previous health conditions.
