Tehran on August 8 said it expects the Iraqi government to prevent any actions that use Iraqi territory for activities against Iran, according to a statement from Iran's Foreign Ministry.
In a phone call with his Iraqi counterpart, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region and called on Baghdad to uphold commitments under the bilateral security agreement to avoid turning Iraqi territory into a launchpad for hostile acts.
Analysts say the move reflects Tehran's concerns that armed groups or foreign forces could use border areas to escalate tensions with Iran, especially amid complex ongoing regional negotiations.
For its part, Iraq reaffirmed its position of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring states and stressed that it would not allow any party to use Iraqi territory to threaten Iran's security.
The two countries have previously held multiple rounds of security consultations to coordinate border control and address shared threats, in an effort to prevent regional conflict from spreading.
